Citizen TV anchor Lulu Hassan had a hard time controlling her tears after her husband Rashid Abdalla surprised her on her birthday after the 7 pm news bulletin on April 24.

As they were wrapping up the show, Rashid set the mood, showering his wife with praise as she struggled to maintain a straight face.

The emotion in the studio was heightened by a melodic birthday tune that was playing in the background making Rashid sound like a poet talking over an instrumental.

Lulu Hassan’s husband handed her a towering bouquet of flowers wrapped to resemble a light bulb and wished her a long life.

Their colleagues at Citizen TV also walked in on the set bearing more flowers, portrait drawings and a cake that was shaped like a fancy handbag.

Tears were flowing freely down her cheeks as she struggled to find words to appreciate the kind gesture and only managed a “thank you” in-between the sobbing.

She picked the knife in readiness to cut the cake but the emotions that rented the air in the studio could not let her.

“Your colleagues, as well as the viewers, love, and value you. May you continue being a blessing to them and all the best,” Rashid wound up the show.

The couple’s dates of birth are just seven days apart, with Rashid having celebrated his on April 17.

On Rashid's birthday, Lulu also treated her husband to the same emotional fanfare during their show in which they were engaging guest Bi Msafwari.

The soft-spoken presenter told her husband that the cake had been provided by Mombasa Tourism Stakeholders headed by the county's Governor Hassan Joho.

The two anchors, who began co-hosting a prime time bulletin in 2018, have been married since 2013 and are blessed with three beautiful children (two boys and a girl).
