The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have in the past few weeks been taking part in the renovation at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

Through the Engineers Brigade’ in the Water Drilling Squadron (WDS), the soldiers drilled four boreholes for the international airport to improve water supply for the increasing operations.

The team has also rehabilitated two pre-existing boreholes that were initially unserviceable as part of the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities by KDF.

The soldiers' efforts will alleviate water shortage at the airport with plans to drill two more boreholes.

The KDF has undertaken borehole drilling activities in various parts of the country.  In June 2020, at least 5,000 homes benefitted from a water project constructed by the Ministry of Defence at Nyagancha Village, Bobasi sub-County.

The force also drilled a borehole for Thika locals at Landless Estate in February 2020.

At the same time, JKIA is currently undergoing a Ksh963 Million renovation which commenced in January 2021.

The refurbishment works are being undertaken at terminals 1B and 1C to improve the check-in, security screening, retail operations as well as lounge experience for departing passengers.

The renovation includes new world-class retail and food options, best-in-class technology, upgraded check-in and lounge areas, improved passenger flows, and other travel experience enhancements.

KAA acting CEO Alex Gitari noted that the refurbishment aimed to improve customer experience in the airport.

"The refurbishment and facelift of the T1B and 1C aims to align the passenger experience in these terminals to match what is offered at T1A.

"The remodelling project is an integral part of the ongoing JKIA Customer Service Improvement Plan (CSIP) which was formulated from feedback from our stakeholders and customers," he noted at the time.
