A report by Nation on Sunday, June 6, indicated that one of the officers was taken to the hospital in serious condition while the suspect, Ismail Mwandembo, was shot dead during the confrontation.

The man, who hailed from Mwatate, Taita Taveta County, had reportedly been on the run for a while as police hunted for him over rape claims.

He reportedly assaulted some of his family members while evading police arrest.

During the melee, Mwandembo took a shield behind his mother and at some point, threatened to kill her.

"When he saw the police he tried to shield himself with his mother. The suspect was carrying a machete and a knife and threatened to kill her if the police insisted on arresting him.

"Officers tried to warn him by shooting in the air but he defied to surrender. He then attacked an officer by cutting him on the forehead and that forced the police to shoot him dead," stated Shari.

The officers were taken to Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi.

Assault on police officers has been on the rise lately with armed thugs and robbers returning fire after encountering a police ambush.

In mid-April, three robbers were shot dead after they were caught on CCTV cameras robbing supermarkets.

Police in Eldoret town disclosed, at the time, that the three were gunned down after a fierce shootout between the gang of five and enforcement officers.

In the incident which occurred at around 7.30 pm, the thugs had come out to rob Transmatt supermarket located within the CBD.

On Sunday, May 30, a 17-year-old police imposter was put behind bars alongside a 26-year-old accomplice, after being nabbed allegedly conning clients in Nakuru Town.

The two were reportedly found in possession of military gear including jackets and handcuffs.

Upon interrogation, the duo directed the police to a private household in Mwaniki Estate in Nakuru where additional equipment was recovered.
