A male suspect masquerading as a woman was among two suspects arrested for allegedly terrorizing joggers along Langata and Mbagathi roads on Monday, June 28.
In a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Peter Omweno Momanyi (24), who was dressed as a woman and his accomplice John Muchiri Kimani (25), were arrested after they defied police orders to stop.
An officer who noticed something was amiss with the two had asked them to stop but the duo disobeyed and started running.
"Unbeknownst to the thugs, they had just encountered the lanky, young crime busters based at Langata Police Station, whose speed and proficiency in chasing after thugs is unsurpassed," reads the statement by DCI in part.
Following the chase, the duo was arrested a few metres past the Mbagathi bridge, and crude weapons, including a knife and a chain, were recovered from them.
"Detectives based at Langata have established that the two are among suspects who waylay fitness enthusiasts who jog along Langata and Mbagathi roads, early in the morning and late in the evening," reads the statement.
The duo is set to be arraigned in court on Tuesday, June 29.
Meanwhile, police officers have asked members of the public who might have lost valuables to the two to make a report at the Lang'ata Police Station.
A section of Kenyans have on numerous occasions sounded an alarm over a surge in cases of muggings and theft along various busy roads.
The routes include; Oloitoktok Road, Westlands Road, Mbagathi Way, Lang'ata Road and Waiyaki Way.
"It is very common on Mbagathi Way especially in the morning for those who jog towards T-Mall or Kenyatta National Hospital on the other side. A lot of joggers enjoy listening to music while running so they carry their phones and joggers are aware of this," a resident of Nyayo Highrise Estate previously told Kenyans.co.ke.
The incident came weeks after police officers posing as joggers shot dead two robbers believed to be part of a gang terrorising residents along the Southern Bypass.
