A three-year-old infant who had been carried on her mother's back escaped with minor injuries after the duo was knocked down by a speeding vehicle on Monday, July 5.

Unfortunately, the mother, Sharon Otieno, sustained head injuries and died on the spot while the infant was rushed to Ndhiwa Sub-county hospital.

Otieno, who was walking on a pedestrian path along the Sori – Rodi Kopany road in Ndhiwa town, Homa Bay county, had her child strapped to her chest when the truck hit them from behind.

Ndhiwa Sub County Police commander Robert Aboki confirmed the incident, adding that the truck driver had already been arrested.

“The driver drove to Ndhiwa Police Station to escape mob justice in Ndhiwa town. He reported the matter, and we have detained him,” Aboki told the Standard.

Police have since launched an investigation into the matter before he is taken to court.

Aboki urged motorists to observe traffic rules to enhance safety on the roads.

The deceased has been taken to Manyatta Kobodo mortuary.

The incident took place just weeks after Meline Waithera Njoroge, the daughter of Deputy Inspector General Edward Njoroge, died after she was crashed by a vehicle in Nairobi CBD.

Speaking during her funeral, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i vowed that the perpetrators would be brought to book.

"It is moments like this that we are reminded that some of us engage in conduct and behavior that gets us here. Now we are burying a very promising young girl.

"We would not be here today if it were not for some mad people who were driving all over the place," he added.
