Deputy IG's Daughter Dies in CBD Matatu Accident

Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua's daughter passed away on Thursday, June 17, at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after she was involved in a matatu accident

25-year-old Nelly Waithera was sandwiched between two matatus while crossing Tom Mboya Street at around 8 am. 

According to a police report, the driver of one of the matatus was reversing along Murang'a Lane junction.

Waithera incurred critical head injuries after the bus crushed her against another which was stationary.

"The incident involved an Isuzu Minibus - KMO Sacco - and a City shuttle,” the police report read.

The youthful lady was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital by emergency service providers who rushed to the scene. 

She succumbed while being attended to by medics at the facility. 

Her body was ferried to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital mortuary, pending a postmortem.

Both vehicles were towed and detained at Central Police Station awaiting inspection.

Police also questioned the drivers and recorded their statements before they were released. 

Investigations into the case commenced. Waithera's family has not yet issued a statement on her death.
