Police have confirmed they were investigating the alleged suicide of Kikuyu musician Edward Irungu Njaro.

This is after questions emerged over the manner in which the singer died. Mbeere South police boss Gregory Mutiso stated that cops were coordinating with teams to establish how Irungu died.

Irungu died after an alleged suicide and he left a note behind claiming to have taken his life over a Ksh700,000 debt. But reports by the Nation indicated that the musician did not indicate who he owed.

“A postmortem examination will help establish the actual circumstances under which the victim met his death. The body had no physical injuries. We are liaising with our colleagues from Nairobi, Kirinyaga and Murang’a to gain a deeper understanding of his disappearance and death,” Mutiso was quoted by the publication.

The singer was reported missing in Nairobi, but his body was found106km away from the city.

He went missing on July 14 after he sent his friends a text message that he was jumping into the River Tana owing to depression over the loan.

In the suicide note saved on his phone, Irungu directed his friends to retrieve a vehicle he would use at the boundary of Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Embu counties on the Kenol-Nyeri highway.

"When I go missing, don't waste a lot of time looking for me. My body will be in Sagana River," read the message.

However, the vehicle was found at the Kasarani Police Station in Nairobi County and details over who moved it from the original crime scene are not yet established.

Kasarani Division Police Boss Patrick Mwazo stated the vehicle was towed in and surrendered as “belonging to a missing person who resided on nearby Kamiti Road”.

His body was found floating in the Masinga Hydroelectric Power Station’s dam on the boundary between Embu and Machakos counties.

Irungu is the brother of the late popular Kikuyu musician George Wanjaro. Before his death, he sang songs like Date ya Mbeere and Wanjaro Marua ma Jacqueline.

The 46-year-old teacher was mourned as a charismatic leader who had never shown signs of depression.
