Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, has imposed a 6pm to 6am curfew in the volatile counties of Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot.

In a special gazette notice dated Friday, August 6, Matiang'i stated that the three counties had experienced insecurity due to the unrest in Tot area.

During this time, the CS warned that there would be no public gatherings, processions or movement, either alone or as a group.

Exceptions would only be made to those with written permission by the Inspector General of the National Police Service.

"This Order shall apply during the hours of darkness between six o’clock in the evening and six o’clock in the morning with effect from the 7th August, 2021 and shall remain in effect for a period of sixty days," reads an excerpt of the notice.

The curfew affects Kalowa and Ngoron divisions of Tiaty West Sub County, Baringo County, Tot and Chesongoch Divisions of Elgeyo Marakwet East Sub County, as well as Sekerat and Cheptulel divisions of Pokot Central Sub County.

CS Matiang'i has been meeting with area leaders to discuss the way forward on how peace can be maintained.

In a recent incident, a group of armed bandits attacked herders in the Kaben area of Elgeyo Marakwet, killing at least five people and injuring another five.

An estimate of 100 bandits reportedly entered Elgeyo Marakwet County from Baringo County, targeting the Chepkorowo grazing field.

Additional police officers were deployed in the area in a bid to calm the situation.

Officials suspected that the bandits are those who had staged attacks in Kapedo and escaped the security operations that took place in the area.

"Many armed bandits escaped. It seems they notified each other of the move to Marakwet,"Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner Ahmed Omar stated.
