The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga's rally in Kasipul Constituency, Homa Bay County, was cancelled abruptly on Thursday, August 5.
National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohammed disclosed that Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe contacted ODM party officials and urged them not to hold the meeting.
Kagwe told the officials to halt the gatherings until the Covid-19 infections reduced.
"He told us the situation was not good. I was also called by the Inspector General of Police who urged me to stop the gatherings,” Junet told KTN News.
The legislature hoped that the infections would go down by August 18, so that the rally would continue as planned.
Odinga was expected to meet party delegates in the area ahead of similar meetings across the country.
The ODM leader is expected to tour Western Kenya, followed by the Coast region, Northeastern, Eastern, the Rift Valley and Nairobi.
“We will also move to Mt Kenya region where we will flatten the political mountain with a bulldozer that will usher in a new political tsunami, which will sweep across the country in the next election,” Raila stated previously.
“Our journey to State House is like the journey of the Israelites when they were coming from Egypt heading to Canaan. We still know where we are despite the journey being far,” he added.
Already, some members of the Jubilee Party have welcomed an Odinga presidency come 2022.
Jubilee Vice Chairperson David Murathe stated that Kenyans should anticipate a coalition between ODM and Jubilee Party.
"From now henceforth, we want to come together and form a new coalition and we need the young people,” Murathe stated.
