Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has ordered a probe after police officers were caught on camera taking an assortment of expensive drinks on Wednesday, August 11 at Spasso Restaurant and Bar in Karen.

Mutyambai dispatched two senior police officers from Internal Affairs to the premises where they recorded statements from workers who were on duty on Wednesday.

The officers are estimated to have made away with drinks worth Ksh110,000.

Robert Shaw, an economist who had gone to the restaurant to buy his dinner, has also recorded a statement describing the incident as scary.

He narrated that the two police officers stormed the restaurant at 8:30pm and went straight to the bar where they demanded drinks.

The bartender was hesitant prompting the officers to push her aside and take the drinks themselves.

"I wondered whether they were actual police officers. One of the officers told me to go back to my country," Shaw told the Standard.

“The officer talked to me in a very demeaning manner.... It is important to point out that they did not state under which Act or piece of legislation they were doing this and for what reasons," he added.

The hotel's workers reported that they had not contravened any Covid-19 rules.

In the video shared widely on social media platforms, the officers were heard daring restaurant's patrons to make a formal complaint to Mutyambai.

The aggrieved patrons could be heard defending themselves saying that they had not violated curfew laws but their pleas went unheard.

“No, you are behind the law, you don’t know the law,” one of the officers stated.
