The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Services (NCWSC) has announced free services for city landlords as it seeks to increase connection to the regional grid.

In a statement released on Tuesday, August 17, NCWSC announced that it was providing free engineering designs and supervision services for landlords whose buildings are located near sewer lines.

Under normal circumstances, the sewer connection costs Ksh5,000 for domestic households and Ksh7,500 for commercial purposes without additional design and supervision charges.

"Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) would like to increase access to sewerage services as per its mandate.

"In this mandate, we kindly inform all landlord and developers with houses within 100 meters of our sewer to contact our Engineering offices at Kampala Road, Industrial Area for free engineering designs

(drawings) and supervision services," read the statement in part

The agency further directed that for the first year, the construction will be undertaken by the individual developers.

"The construction of the sewer is to be done by the developer/owner and the sewer will be adopted by NCWSC after one year of operation.

"The official charge per connection is Ksh 5,000 and Ksh7,500 only for domestic and commercial connections respectively payable to NCWSC is applicable," added the statement.

As recent as February 2021, Kenyans living in Nairobi were up in arms after raw sewage flowing into people's houses exposed the sorry state of the city's sewerage line.

In a video posted online at the time, some tenants of Githurai 45 were seen walking through the sludge as they tried to salvage their property which was trapped in the houses.

The residents stated that the sewerage flowed in their houses on Sunday, February 7, following a heavy downpour, escalating on Monday when the rains continued.

The situation seems to worsen across the city with every rainy season.
