The Ministry of Education has launched investigations into six schools based in Nairobi after parents lodged complaints about extra charges being levied by the learning institutions.

Regional Director of Education, Jared Otieno, has asked the six schools under investigation to offer an explanation on the complaints by the parents.

According to the Standard, the six schools that are under investigation include Kifaru, Busara, Unity, Bidii, Tumaini and Peter Kibuosya Primary schools.

The Ministry of Education sent auditors to the schools to establish whether the claims made by parents are valid.

Reports indicated that parents were being charged to get their children admitted to these schools.

The Ministry of Education says that it has conducted investigations and currently gathering further evidence against the schools and the teachers involved in the malpractices.

Should the teachers be found culpable of violating the school fees directives issued by CS George Magoha, the Ministry says that all those involved will be held to account.

The Standard reported that the school heads of the institutions under investigation defended the alleged actions stating that the decision to charge the aforesaid amounts was not made unilaterally but by the school board and that parents had agreed to it.

Schools like Peter Kibukosya allegedly charged parents Ksh1,000 for interviews and Ksh9,800 for admission while Bidii Primary charged parents had to pay Ksh8,000 to secure admissions.

This is against the directive by CS Magoha warning public primary and secondary schools against charging fees outside the government circulars.
