A lecturer at Maseno University learned a painful lesson from his peers on Monday, August 23 after the group forcefully ejected him from class during a lesson.
The institution's tutors had organised a strike for all lecturers to lament delay in salaries. Some lecturers claimed that they received less pay from what they anticipated.
A video that surfaced online showed a crowd storm into a fully parked classroom at the institution and disrupt an ongoing class.
The lecturer, dressed in a black and white strip T-shirt, was escorted out by a woman who was blowing a whistle while her colleagues followed, cheered on.
Some of the students who were undertaking that class cheered on as the incident unfolded.
Generally, the lecturers, who congregated in their hundreds, held protests inside the institution, chanting solidarity slogans.
They then took their protests to the streets outside the institution while carrying twigs.
This comes three days after the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) issued a seven-day strike notice on Friday, August 20.
UASU officials threatened to mobilise the body's members to down their tools over what they termed as "government failure to implement the 2017 - 2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)".
The union's chairperson, Grace Nyongesa, accused public universities' Vice-Chancellors of deliberately refusing to honour the CBA, despite court orders directing them to do so.
“We take great exception in the manner in which we have been handled. We take great exception in the manner in which the Vice-Chancellors, who know what they should do, have deliberately ignored and failed to execute their mandate on this matter.
“Our CBA 2021 has not been fully implemented, yet the dons of this country have continued to deliver their services," stated Nyongesa.
The institutions of higher learning have over the years battled part-time lecturers and their associates over delayed pay disputes.
