Outspoken Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, Kipchumba Murkomen, has offered to pay school fees for a 14-year-old girl who attempted suicide after her parents were unable to raise the amount required to enroll her to secondary school.

In a statement posted on social media on Monday, August 30, Murkomen disclosed that he had make arrangements to have Winnie Jebiwot admitted to a boarding school.

He added that he would take care of the student's school fees and shopping, adding that Jebiwot would be in school by close of business on Tuesday, August 31.

Jebiwot had ingested 20mm of a poisonous agro-chemical on Wednesday, August 25, at their home in Kipsaina, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

She was later rushed to a nearby dispensary where she was treated and later discharged.

"She feels frustrated and needs assistance because all her friends have already gone back to school and she is the only one at home," a neighbour stated.

Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha, is determined to ensure 100 percent transition to secondary schools.

On Monday, he visited Baringo County where he lamented that the County was lagging behind in the transition to secondary school.

“If you want to resign and go into politics, do so now. I am telling you in public that I will not take it,” the CS told Rift Valley Regional Director of Education, John Lekakeny.

Lekakeny tried to defend himself saying that he had not been available in Baringo because he had been overseeing other Counties. His statement, however, did not go well with the CS.

“You are telling me you have not been to Baringo. Who is in charge of Baringo then?” he posed.

An officer who was standing beside the CS tried to defend Lekakeny but was asked to shut up.
