Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, was accompanied by a contingent of top security bosses as he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on National Security on Wednesday, September 1.
The CS was accompanied by Interior Principal Secretary, Karanja Kibicho, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, George Kinoti, Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai and, Deputy Inspector General Administration Police Service Noor Gabow
Matiang'i was also accompanied by several other top cops in charge of different departments in the National Police Service.
All the security bosses were dressed in official police regalia.
CS Matiang'i did not waste time as he went ahead to explain to parliamentarians why changes were instituted in DP Ruto's security detail.
He told MPs that DP Ruto has 74 security officers protecting him every minute of the day and his security was not compromised by the reshuffle as alleged by politicians allied to him.
The Interior CS stated Ruto has the highest number of security officers assigned to him compared to all Vice Presidents that Kenya has had since independence.
CS Matiang'i stated that there are officers assigned to the DP by IG Mutyambai following a direct request from the Office of the Deputy President.
"Apart from the 74 presidential escort security officers assigned to DP, he has much other security personnel provided to him in total numbering to 257. We have provided sufficient security to the holder of the Office of the Deputy President," CS Matiang'i stated.
"We have about 4K security personnel in the country who are supposed to protect VIP and VVIP. President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP Ruto are protected by a special unit called the Presidential Escort Unit," he added.
The CS said there was no withdrawal but rearrangement of the second layer of security which did not affect the first layer of DP's security.
He maintained that this was done after serious consultation by the National Security Council.
