Signs Media Kenya on September 3, 2021 launched the first-ever sign language television station. The channel's programming is exclusively dedicated to People With Disability (PWD).

During the launch, the station’s Managing Director Luke Muleka, stated that Signs Tv Kenya will use technology to enhance the creation and dissemination of social, political and economic programmes for PWD.

Muleka also added that the content that will be aired on the station will adhere to the ethical guidelines set by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK).

To achieve this, the MD noted that the media regulatory body had sufficiently trained its staff prior to the launch.

“We have received great support from government agencies, notably, the media council which supported us at the peak of the pandemic and trained our staff, greatly improving the quality of our content,” Muleke stated.

The MD further added that the station has incorporated state of the art technology, all with the aim of ensuring high-quality content is churned out.

On the other hand, Sign Tv presenter Videliz  Njoki, added that the training by MCK was integrated to meet the special needs of the television staff.

“MCK trained us on journalism practice and the code of conduct which has immensely enhanced our skills. We did not struggle in our learning as their lessons were integrated and inclusive for our special needs,” Njoki stated.

Kenyans took to social media to laud the move by the media company, stating that the television station will help in highlighting issues facing PWD.

“I am so proud of those who came up with the Sign Tv Kenya Idea. It's also a perfect job creation opportunity,” Lewis Jakoredo tweeted.

The TV station will integrate sign language, video and audio to cater for all the PWD groups. Westlands Member of Parliament Timothy Wanyonyi,  attended the launch.
