Former marathoner Tegla Lorupe and former Kenya 7s Rugby team captain Humphrey Kayange have received government appointments.

The two were appointed by Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed to the Board of the Kenya Academy of Sports Council on Friday, September 24 through a Gazette Notice.

The appointments take effect immediately. “In exercise of the powers conferred by section 35 (1) of the Sports Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture, and Heritage appoints Humphrey Kayange and Tegla Lorupe to be members of the Board of the Kenya Academy of Sports Council, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 21st September 2021, ” read the statement.

The Kenya Academy of Sports is a state corporation established under the Sports Act to develop sports talents through the formation and management of academies, training, and research for global competitiveness and sustainable socio-economic growth in Kenya.

The duo has played a vital role in representing the country as athletes in different fields.

Loroupe holds the world records for 20, 25, and 30 kilometres and previously held the world marathon record.

She is the three-time World Half-Marathon champion. Loroupe became the first woman from Africa to win the New York City marathon. She has also won major races in London, Boston, Rotterdam, Hong Kong, Berlin, and Rome.

Other than that, she was played a key role in peacekeeping between warring communities in Pokot and Turkana by organising marathons through her Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation.

Kayange also is a legend in rugby. He aided the Kenya Sevens to achieve in the HSBC Sevens World Series before retiring.

In 2018, the then Sports CS Rashid Echesa appointed them to the same board.

The latest appointment made by CS Amina is extending their term at the board for a period of three years.

Their task will entail continuing to push for sports reforms in the country in line with the Board's expectations.
