  • A Principal Administrative Secretary  (PAS) attached to the ministry of Interior and his bodyguard narrowly survived a fatal road accident on Friday, September 24.

PAS Coordination Operations and Protocol, Abdul Mwaserah and his bodyguard sustained injuries in a multiple-car crash along the Mai-Mahiu- Narok Highway.

The accident was confirmed  by  Narok East  Sub County Commander Jared Okari Marando who stated that the trailer lost control due to brake failure and rammed into two vehicles at Duka Moja area.

Marando added that the trailer began spinning and rammed into two vehicles including a Toyota Land Cruiser TX, Mwaserah's official vehicle, and a saloon car.

The trailer's turnboy identified as Vincent Nyambura lost his life on the spot.

Mwaserah and his bodyguard were rushed to the Narok Referral Hospital, where they were treated for tissue injuries they sustained.  They were discharged on the same day after being cleared.

Occupants of the saloon car, a man and a woman, as well as the driver of the trailer, were lucky to escape unharmed. The body of the deceased was moved to the Narok County Referral County Hospital mortuary, awaiting post mortem.

Marando confirmed that the police would conduct further investigations into the accident.

The Mai-Mahiu stretch infested with trailers has become prone to road accidents. On July 8,  a motorcycle and its pillion passenger lost their lives after they rammed into a truck at Mtarakwa along the road.

On January 10, two people lost their lives after a trailer that had experienced brake failure rammed into three other vehicles.

According to Hogun Injury, brake failure in the trailer is mainly caused by overloading. A truck pulling too much weight requires excessive braking distances even when the breaks are in mint condition.

Other causes of brake failure include truck drivers not using the front brakes, inadequate maintenance, overheating of brakes on downhills and brake imbalance.
