The DCI's Special Service Unit (SSU) on Monday, September 27, conducted a mission in Tanzania where it rescued a 14-year-old girl who had been kidnapped from her home in Nyeri County.

The girl, who was on her mid-term break, disappeared in the wee hours of the morning of August 25, after she had walked out of their house to relieve herself.

The next morning, her parents woke up to a rude surprise when they realized that their daughter was not in the house.

The parents later reported her disappearance at Gatitu Police station. The case grabbed the attention of Nyeri DCI officer John Gacheru who took charge of the investigation.

Due to the urgency of the situation the file was moved to the directorate's headquarters for specialized action.

After more than four weeks of probing, the suspect was apprehended on Monday morning in Engarika, Northern Tanzania and the girl was saved.

The rescue was a combined effort conducted by the elite Special Service Unit together with Tanzania's regional crime office in Arusha.

The Class 8 pupil's reunion with her family and friends was one filled with emotions as it was a relief for the family to finally find peace.

The suspect, who worked as a night watchman close to the girl's home, is currently in custody at a police station in Monduli District, Tanzania. He will be arraigned and charged with rape and kidnapping.

The DCI attributed the mission's success to the quick action by Interpol in aiding the SSU detectives to partner with their Tanzanian counterparts.

The incident came a few days after a similar partnership between Kenyan authorities and Uganda's Criminal Investigations Department (CID)led to the rescue of 38 victims of human trafficking in Kenya.
