A student who scored an A minus in the 2020 Kenya Certificate Of Secondary Education (KCSE) has resorted to doing menial jobs in a bid to raise fees for college.

Jemimah has taken it upon herself to raise money for her university education and she will stop at nothing, or so it seems.

Coming from a very humble background in Kitalale, Trans Nzoia, she has resorted to washing dishes and splitting firewood and all other kinds of menial jobs to raise money for her fees.

Jemimah's parents are unable to meet the expenses for her university education - her tuition fees and upkeep.

She had secured placement at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) to pursue a bachelor of technology degree in medical laboratory sciences.

" I was called to TUM due to financial problems, my family has not been able to take me there," Jemimah explained.

Her father is a caretaker while her mother, despite being sick, does casual jobs to make ends meet. However, the money can barely sustain them.

"I have been trying my best to look for money to raise the fees but the money I make is just not enough," her father stated.

Her mother added that she had to quit her job as a house keeper over harsh working conditions. She stated that she only earned Ksh1,000 a week and had to walk to and fro.

She added that the amount was too little as it was used to meet daily expenses.

Jemimah adds to the list of top-performing students who risk losing their chance at a higher education due to lack of fees.

Kevin Otieno, who also scores an A-minus almost missed out on an opportunity to pursue a degree in medicine. His fees was paid by well-wishers as well as lecturers from Moi University.
