Prisoners at the Nakuru Maximum Prison were on Tuesday, September 29, treated to comic relief from the tough-talking Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, and his health counterpart, Mutahi Kagwe.

Matiang'i and Kagwe, who visited the facility to launch the mass Covid-19 vaccination for inmates, excited the inmates with their light comments while asking them to take take advantage and get the jab.

The two CSs, while debunking the myths making rounds on the jabs, stated that it was untrue that the vaccines had harmful side effects to those who get them.

Kagwe added it was untrue that upon taking the jab, one would suffer health complications including those that affect the fertility of men.

Using himself as an example, he assured the male inmates that the vaccine would not affect their ability to sire children, a comment that made them burst into laughter.

"Those who say that one cannot sire because of the vaccine, I would like to state that I have been vaccinated, and I can openly attest that one can have children even after getting the jab, but don't ask me how I knew it," Kagwe remarked amid laughter from the inmates.

His comments were echoed by CS Matiangi, who spoke about the issue in a proverbial yet funny manner to drive the message home.

"If the CS has been vaccinated and the transformer is still performing its job, then what are you worried about?" Matiang'i posed.

The vaccination drive is in line with a plan to resume family visits for inmates in correctional facilities. Kenya Prisons in conjunction with the Ministry of Health rolled out phase one of a Rapid Results Initiative.

The programme targets to administer vaccines to all prison staff and inmates in the next five days.

Kagwe's Ministry also launched a nation-wide vaccination drive, calling for Kenyans to avail themselves for the jab. On Wednesday, September 29, the Health CS raised concern about burials which had now become spreading grounds, more than political rallies.
