The Kenya Railways Corporation has issued a statement after a photo of a house being constructed on the railway line went viral.

In the photo, a building is under construction in the middle of the railway line and a small shop stands less than a metre from the same place.

The photo went viral on Wednesday, September 29, with Kenyans questioning why action had not been taken to kick out the people who had encroached on the railway land.

In its response, Kenya Railways issued a warning to the contractor undertaking the housing project, noting that it will soon embark on reclaiming railway land and that no one should complain when such structures are demolished.

“Don't complain when reclaiming of railway land takes place,” read the warning from the corporation.

Kenya Railways warned the rogue contractor to stop further construction and pull down the structure before it gets too late.

The corporation has warned that should the contractor fail to do so, the demolitions will have to be undertaken forcefully.

This comes exactly a week after the corporation issued another warning to Kenyans for breaking traffic rules and regulations.

They directed that any person found guilty of breaking rules governing operations of the trains risks serving a sentence of upto ten years.

“While public safety remains a top priority for us, members of the public are reminded to have a personal responsibility,” read an excerpt of the statement.
