A court in the United States has found a Kenyan woman not guilty despite prosecution evidence indicating that she had murdered her housemate.
According to the prior postmortem results, it indicated the victim had suffered 65 body injuries at home and the Judge described it as a graphic case.
Her body was found in November 2018, leading to the arrest of the Kenyan woman. During the raid on her house by police officers, the law enforcement officers recovered a knife, poker, and an axe.
The court hearings and evidence all pointed out and proved that she indeed committed the inhumane act.
However, while delivering the judgment, the jury resolved to set her free following a medical report that established she had underlying mental health conditions.
The report from two consultant psychiatrists noted that the Kenyan woman was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the murder and had delusional beliefs that the deceased man was trying to hurt her.
Other than that, the report also established that she had delusions about the British Royal Family including Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Princess Diana.
Based on those reports, the jury deliberated on the matter for two and a half hours and returned with a landmark verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity.
Following the court's ruling, the Kenyan was moved to Central Mental Hospital in Foxrock, Dublin.
According to Legal Information Institute, “Not guilty by reason of insanity” is a plea entered by a defendant in a criminal trial, where the defendant claims that they were so mentally disturbed or incapacitated at the time of the offense that they did not have the required intent to commit the crime, and are therefore not guilty.
This type of verdict is only applicable when the mental report is conclusive.
