Interior Cabinet Secretay Dr Fred Matiang'i Wednesday, October 6, announced Monday, October 11, will be a public holiday.

In a statement, Matiang'i said that since Utamaduni Day falls on Sunday, October 10, the celebration will be observed on Monday in accordance with the Public Holidays Act.

Utamaduni Day was traditionally marked as Moi Day until 2003 when President Mwai Kibaki's administration stopped marking the holiday.

Matiang'i later noted that the day would be observed as Utamaduni Day.

The renaming of the national holiday was in line with former President Daniel Arap Moi's desire that the day should be commemorated as a day of service and volunteerism.

In 2020, the day was observed through national prayers that highlighted service and volunteerism to the community.

Kenyans were encouraged to participate in prayers and promote national unity, social justice, cohesion and sustainable development in their communities.

Moi was the second president of Kenya and the country's longest-serving head of state, ruling from 1978 - 2002.

The day was celebrated on October 10, to mark the beginning of Moi's presidency.

But the holiday was removed from Kenya's national holidays following the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya in 2010.

It was reinstated in 2017 following a court ruling. Justice George Odunga declared the 2010 nullification of Moi Day was a contravention of the Public Holidays Act.

Justice Odunga noted that if Parliament was of the view that Moi Day ought not to continue being considered as a public holiday, they should have amended the Act accordingly.
