The government, through the Ministry of Education has announced that it has put in place measures to manage the looming crisis ahead of the reopening of schools .
Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has assured school heads that there will be no cash crunch, when learners resume classes next week.
Appearing before the members of Parliament on Thursday, October 7, Magoha assured lawmakers that the government will disburse funds to schools before classes resume.
He noted that they are working round the clock to ensure that by Tuesday, October 12, Ksh17 billion will be in the accounts of public schools.
“Schools open on Tuesday next week. Let me assure you that the Ksh17 billion required will be available before then,” the CS stated.
Magoha further warned school heads against sending students away because of fees arrears.
“No child should be charged extra levy and no child should be sent home. If you have such cases, bring them to our attention. I'm sure the Teachers Service Commission will take action,” Magoha remarked.
He however asked parents who are able to pay school fees for their children to do so, since they play a key role in the financing of development projects in schools.
Notably, the CS was categorical that his ministry has done well before and assured the members of parliament that this shall not be a hard task to execute.
“The ministry has been making regular interventions through funding under the Free Day Secondary Education capitation to enable schools maintain, improve and expand their infrastructure,” the cabinet secretary noted.
On Tuesday, October 5, school heads had raised concerns that school operations were likely to be halted because of insufficient funds.
They requested the government to release funds in advance to allow school operations to continue smoothly.
