A Catholic priest from Kilifi County has won the hearts of his congregants through the use of comical theatrics during his religious teachings.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Father Henry Katana incorporates the use of folk songs, dance and the use of traditional instruments such as the Kayambas to pass his messages.

Speaking to the media, Katana affirmed that he resorted to using theatrics and visualisations to capture the attention of his audience and ensure that they remain focused on hearing the word.

His sermons, he stated, were based on leaving a memorable impact on the listener by ensuring they constantly remember the teachings. Father Katana reiterated that his model is effective in communicating the biblical teachings to the locals.

"I use these comical ways for a reason. For instance, you find that when I use songs in my sermons, the congregants get the message, this is a secret that most people don't know," he stated.

His theatrical sermons have earned him the chance of entertaining influential personalities such as the late Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis.

At one juncture in his life, he teamed up with the late Mathias Keah, former Assistant Minister for Finance, to preach and teach through drama.

His congregants heaped praise on him, stating that they adored his flair and enjoyed his sermons which incorporated basic requirements for the Catholics. These are attending Mass every Sunday, observing the holy day of obligation and the confession of sins.

Others include receiving the Holy Communion during Easter, obeying the marriage laws of the church as well as observing laws on fasting and abstinence.

Various churches incorporate different mechanisms in relaying the message. From the use of technology to poetry, animations and graphics.

Churches are also embracing digital technology to reach out to their congregants. Services are streamed online via social media pages, Facebook and Instagram.

Some faithful further use Whatsapp groups to keep in touch, fellowship together and make follow-ups on colleagues.
