Self confessed serial killer Masten Wajala escaped from Jogoo Road Police Station under unclear circumstances on Tuesday evening, October 12.
Details have emerged indicating that Wanjala could have escaped during dinner time at around 6pm to 7pm or moments after.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was last seen sharing a meal with seven other inmates. At the time, there was a power outage at the station.
At 8pm, the eight inmates were joined by 10 others who had just been arrested. Shortly after, two other inmates were brought into the cell bringing the total number of inmates to 20.
In the morning, an officer who conducted roll call noted that Wanjala was missing and informed two of his colleagues who were on duty.
The officers stated that they did not know how the two escaped as there were no signs of breakage in the cells.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and their counterparts from the Nairobi region have since questioned the officers on duty and inmates in the cell to unravel what could have happened.
Police have also launched a manhunt for Wanjala who is still at large.
The suspect was to appear at the Makadara Law Court on Wednesday, October 13, for a hearing of his case where he is faced with 13 counts of murder.
This was after he confessed to killing at least 15 children in Nairobi and two other counties.
A number of lawmakers have weighed in on the matter with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko offering a cash reward for anyone who has information that would lead to the arrest of Wanjala.
On the other hand, former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale has called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai.
“We must insist that the Inspector General Mr Mutyambai should resign before 1pm today, because how can a serial murderer who murdered 13 children, at a police station properly manned by police officers, just walk out of a police station; no window or door broken," said Khalwale in an interview.
