Bars, Hotels and Liquor Traders Association (BAHLITA) has proposed to offer free beers to customers who will be vaccinated inside their premises.
On Friday, October 22, the association tabled their proposal as an incentive to have the Ministry of Health use their establishments as Covid-19 vaccination centres.
BAHLITA secretary, Boniface Gachoka, argued that bars have frequent customers like churches and hospitals and urged the Ministry to leverage this opportunity.
“Bars are gathering points for people and like churches, can become one of the places where people can be sure to access vaccines regularly."
“We extend an invitation to the Ministry of Health to collaborate with our members, especially the large establishments to provide vaccines to more Kenyan,” he stated.
The chairman, Frank Mbogo, added that the bars would ensure that they adhere strictly to the Bar Kumi idea, a self-regulating mechanism to ensure adherence to the Covid-19 protocols.
BAHLITA is seeking to re-employ 90,000 workers who lost their jobs when 15,000 bars shut down during the pandemic.
“Our wish, which we can all help fulfil, is to have operations going back to normal and to never have again to shut down."
“We thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for vacating the curfew,” Mbogo appreciated.
As of Friday, October 22, 4,826,129 Kenyans were vaccinated out of 8 million doses received.
4.8 per cent of adults were fully vaccinated. The number of positive and recovery cases stood at 252,499 and 245,962 respectively.
