An armed gunman was shot dead by police attached to Ruiru police station after a fierce shootout in Kihunguro Estate, off Thika Road.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives stated that the gunman, alongside his accomplice, were fleeing the scene after robbing a couple of their valuables which included a brand new Toyota Allion vehicle.

Reports indicate that the gunmen identified themselves as police officers before proceeding to rob the two at around 3.40 am.

The robbers shot in the air in a bid to scare off the victims - a gunshot which alerted the attention of nearby police officers.

"They had shot severally in the air as they escaped, to the scare of the neighbourhood. Luckily, agile police officers on patrol heard the shots and sped to the scene immediately. On gathering the crux of the robbery, they made chase of the gang who had disappeared to an unknown route," the DCI stated.

After minutes of endless pursuit, the officers managed to intercept the two armed gunmen which resulted in a fierce shootout as one of the gunmen fired his mini Ceska pistol at the officers.

In response, the officers fatally shot the robber, as his accomplice fled the scene. Among the items recovered include the deceased's rifle, assorted motor vehicle parts stashed in a sack and mobile phones.

The incident comes days after another fierce shootout was witnessed along the Mwiki -Githurai 45 road in Nairobi County. This is after the three robbers were gunned down by police officers- they were suspected to have stolen a private vehicle in Kayole, Nairobi County the week prior.

"The owner was contacted, and he confirmed that the vehicle was missing from where he had parked it on Thursday night,” read part of the police report.

Further, another incident saw police officers from Homa Bay County shoot at a suspected drug smuggler who had evaded multiple roadblocks.

The suspect, however, managed to vanish into a thicket and escaped from the officers' sight. Investigations have been launched into the whereabouts of the wanted thugs.
