A university student on Sunday, October 31, drowned while attempting to take a selfie next to a waterfall.

Confirming the incident, Chepalungu Sub-County police boss, Nelson Masai, stated that the student was swept away while on a swimming excursion at Kimaya Waterfall on the Chepkulo River.

The student, who is believed to be a second-year student at the Bomet University College, was swimming in the river in the company of twelve others.

It was reported that the student took photos as he swum. He then advanced to the deeper side of the river in search of a better photo position.

Masai stated that the student, whose poor estimation of the depth of the water, soon became a victim of mother nature. He was swept away by the raging waves of the waterfall.

The 24-year-old, despite knowing how to swim, was overpowered by the force of the water, drowning in the process.

Divers were deployed to the river to try and save the boy or at least recover his body. After two hours of the search, they retired back to their homes.

Gideon Ngotwa, one of the divers in Bomet County, told the media that the search would continue on Monday, November 1.

Whether or not his colleagues attempted to help him remains unclear as they are yet to be identified. The police launched a search for the 12 to give their statements about the incident.

In 2017, a 23-year-old student from the Kenya Medical Training Collage (KMTC) Kisii Campus drowned while swimming in Tenwek Falls, Bomet. The student was also a victim of raging waters attributed to heavy rainfall.

One other student was lucky to escape with his life after a passerby spotted him struggling in the water and managed to rescue him.
