Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya party led by Kalonzo Musyoka has announced that it is changing its name.
In a notice in a local daily on Thursday, November 4, the party, which has dropped the Kenya tag, will now be publicly known as the Wiper Democratic Movement.
The notice further indicated that the party would change one of its colours from the ubiquitous sky blue to a more subtle royal blue.
Wiper Party would, however, maintain its umbrella branding alongside its earth red and white colours.
"Pursuant to Section 20(2) of the Political Parties Act, 2011, Wiper Democratic Movement - Kenya intends to change its name from Wiper Democratic Movement - Kenya (WDM-K) to Wiper Democratic Movement and its party colours from bold sky blue, white and earth red to royal blue, white and earth red," read the statement in part.
In 2020, the party's leader Kalonzo Musyoka had hinted at its rebranding that would affect its name and colours.
At the time, the former Vice President, who is also eying the top seat as part on One Kenya Alliance (OKA), explained that the rebranding was aimed at making the party more acceptable to Kenyans.
"We have taken the initiative to rebrand Wiper including the name and even the colour.
"Many people have complained about why we are calling ourselves a body part of a vehicle," stated the Wiper leader at the time.
In 2018, Kalonzo had also announced that the party could relocate its offices from Lavington to a larger space along the Southern Bypass as part of a rebranding plan ahead of the 2022 presidential election.
The party is now headquartered on a three-storey building, the Wiper House, Kufunga Road off Lang'ata Road, that has already been painted in party colours.
Earlier reports had intimated that there was a plan to rebrand and change its name to the 'One Kenya Movement' in a bid to establish itself as a national outfit.
