There was drama at the Bomas of Kenya during the ongoing FORD Kenya's National Delegates Conference after one person was shot following an eruption of chaos.
The Thursday, November 4, incident followed protracted disagreements between two warring factions.
One faction is inclined towards the Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula, while a second faction is opposed to his leadership.
Media reports indicated that the chaos erupted after a huge crowd of delegates left in droves from the main Bomas auditorium and headed to the tents erected outside.
Reports indicated that bullets were fired in the air during the delegates meeting that had been convened to install new leadership at the helm of the party.
During the voting process, it is reported that some delegates tried to disrupt the meeting. One of the delegates is said to have been in possession of a firearm and opened fire at the Dias, hitting one delegate on the shoulder.
The injured person was attended to by St John's Ambulance before he was rushed to a local hospital. Police officers based at Lang'ata Police Station arrived at the crime scene in order to restore order and carry out investigations.
Lang'ata OCPD, Benjamin Mwanthi, affirmed that the suspect had already been taken into custody for questioning even as questions arise as to how he made it to the meeting while armed.
The National Delegates Conference was taking place despite an order by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) that had suspended it pending the hearing and determination of a petition filed by a Mr Crispinus Barasa.
“That pending inter parties hearing and determination of the Notice of Motion application dated November 2, 2021, interim orders for injunction be and are hereby issued restraining the second respondent from proceeding with the NDC,” read part of the order by the Tribunal.
The case is slated for hearing on Monday, November 15.
