Activist Boniface Mwangi has, without doubt, inspired his wife, Hellen Njeri Mwangi, who is now undertaking some undercover investigative works.
Njeri, who also doubles up as an activist, revealed that she was the brains behind one of the investigative pieces that unearthed the underworld of babies theft in the country.
Speaking during an interview on a local TV station on Friday, November 5, Njeri noted that she is the mastermind behind the Baby Stealers investigative piece that aired on British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in November 2020.
The piece was extraordinary in many ways as it revealed details on how kids are stolen in a well-choreographed scheme involving health workers and some individuals who have deep roots in that outlawed venture.
The piece done by Njeri revealed the existence of a secretive but thriving illegal market for stolen babies in the country, prompting the government to take action with several people being apprehended and prosecuted.
Her team exposed three prolific networks that stretched from Nairobi's poorest slums to top government hospitals. Her team, together with the BBC group, shocked the nation on how kids were being snatched from their mothers and sold for as little as Ksh20,000.
Njeri, who has been through a rough path with Mwangi, was approached following a series of complaints that were raised on the syndicate. She boldly took the assignment and the results were significant and life-changing.
"We did the story, Baby Stealers, with BBC, it was my first time, it was an investigative piece and it was quite a learning experience," she stated.
"The way the story caught our attention was when we came across a street mum who boldly spoke to us. We spoke to BBC and they let us do the story. What we found out is that mothers lose their children without a trace. Our work was to find out who are taking these kids and where are they going."
Her hard work together with the BBC team finally paid off as the investigative piece has since been nominated for the 2021 Emmy Awards.
On her future projects, Njeri stated that she is currently working on another piece with BBC that will air either late this year or early next year.
"I am working on something else with BBC hopefully it will be seen either end of this year or early next year."
