Kenyans have overwhelmingly donated towards an initiative started by a teen mother whose story went viral on social media platforms on Wednesday, November 10.

Shirleen Mukami narrated her emotional journey in raising her five-month old child all by herself, after she was abandoned by her boyfriend and the father to the kid.

The 20-year-old narrated the rejection had compelled her to launch an initiative helping single mothers. The initiative has been christened the Baby Shower Sisters initiative.

"This is basically a support group where myself and three more young mothers visit other young mothers like us. Mothers whose baby daddies disappeared.

"Mothers who didn't experience the love of pregnancy. Mothers who didn't experience a baby shower. Broken mothers just like us," she stated.

So far, 801 Kenyans have contributed a total of Ksh623,204, just two days after she highlighted her plight.

The contributions are being raised fast and are expected to be more with just 26 days left to the close of the fundraiser.

The initiative is aimed at reaching 100 girls by the end of 2021, including those who have suffered Gender-Based Violence.

"Kenyans, kindly support our little 'Baby Shower Sisters' initiative. We've been doing little and can't mind doing much.

"Going out more. Meeting more mothers and healing our minds. I don't even have much myself. But it's by giving that I have been receiving a diaper or two myself," she added.

The 20-year-old's story has touched many and sparked a debate among netizens on single motherhood.

Narc Kenya leader, Martha Karua, congratulated the young mother for reaching out to Kenyans.

"Your courage and strength is a blessing to others and you deserve all the support. Keep going and you will achieve great things in life as you raise your lovely child," she stated.
