The government has offered a lifeline to thousands of youth who were locked out of the online Kazi Mtaani programme that was launched on Friday, November 19.
In a statement shared on Sunday, November 21, Housing PS Charles Hinga noted that those locked out of the system could make their applications through Huduma Centers.
He noted that some of the applicants had been locked from the system due to poor network or lack of internet access.
The new directive is also expected to help individuals who could not make the applications due to system clog or breakdown caused by high traffic towards the portal.
"For those with no access to internet, you’ll get an opportunity to register at Huduma Centre soon," explained Hinga.
He also revealed that as at 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 21, a total of 626,620 had registered on the online portal with Nairobi leading with 113,653 applications.
Kiambu came in second with 44,689 applications followed by Nakuru with 33,305. Mombasa recorded 32,548 applications while Wajir had 22,280 and Uasin Gichu came in fifth with 19,020 applications.
During the launch, the system encountered a glitch that made it inaccessible due to overwhelming traffic that crashed the site.
“All those experiencing glitches we shall sort you out, don’t stress,” Hinga added.
The third phase targets 250,000 youths to serve as workers and supervisors for the popular Kazi Mtaani programme.
With the high number of applicants, Hinga urged others to make the applications to enable the government track down the high number of youth unemployment in the country.
"We want to get the full picture so we know what we solving for and plan for the subsequent interventions," he explained.
The State Department for Housing and Urban Development announced it was recruiting inexperienced, experienced, and semi-experienced youths in phase three of the Kazi Mtaani programme.
The workstreams include activities such as construction works using Appropriate Building Materials and Technologies (ABMT), construction of hostels in selected TVETS, construction works to complete previously stalled economic stimulus program market, construction works to remove asbestos roofing in government estates.
