Nairobi commuters have something to smile about after Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) opened five roads that had been closed as a result of the ongoing Nairobi Expressway construction.

In a statement released on Wednesday, November 24, the Authority noted that the entire project was 75 percent complete and that the full opening was slated for June 2022.

In the course of the construction, several roads connected to the project were closed causing massive traffic along the route.

Some of the routes that have been opened include Mlolongo Weighbridge to KAPA Oil Industries, Gateway Mall to Hilton Gardens as well as Sameer Park connected to Southern Bypass.

Other routes were David Osielli Road through to Aga Khan School and Museum Hill access road that allows motorists to connect to Thika Superhighway from Waiyaki Way.

The statement further indicated that since the expressway construction kicked off in 2020, over 4,000 Kenyans got employment while tonnes of construction materials had been procured.

The elevated section of the road stands at 92.6 per cent completion rate with two roads expected to be opened in the month of December.

They are Haille Selassie to University Way Roundabout as well as Gateway Mall area which will be opened by December 15.

The authority further cautioned motorists to take note of five spots along the 25km stretch that are likely to experience traffic jams due to ongoing construction.

The u-turn from Allpack service road, where access from the Mombasa Road has been blocked. Motorists using the route were advised to proceed to Mlolongo to reduce congestion.

The area around Gateway Mall is also likely to experience traffic due to excavation and protection of oil pipeline crossing under the expressway.

Other spots are General Motors (GM) area due to a diversion, Capital Center as well as Bunyala Road Roundabout.

The entire project is valued at Ksh65 billion.
