Police have launched a manhunt for a man who wrestled, assaulted and injured a Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officer before disarming him.

The fugitive was reported to have cornered the officer with a machete, threatened to slash him before he overpowered the 45-year-old ranger in Homa Bay County on Tuesday, November 30.

Detectives assigned to the case detailed that the officer found the attacker felling trees in Lambwe Forest. An altercation later ensued between the two after the officer confronted him.

“The resident was accused of planning to burn charcoal in the forest. He attacked the officer with the machete, injuring him in the head and hands,” Lambwe West Location Chief Daniel Obure noted.

He added that one of the KFS officer’s ears was cut off.

"The extent of injuries showed that the suspect overpowered the officer,” Obure added. Detectives, however, wondered why the officer did not pull out his firearm to caution the resident.

Reports further indicated that the ranger collapsed and fainted after he was slashed. The sleuths believed that the resident seized that moment to steal the weapon before vanishing into the forest

He, however, dumped the gun a few miles away while scampering for safety.

“We rushed the injured officer to a nearby hospital where he received first aid before being rushed to the County Teaching and Referral Hospital where he was admitted,” the chief narrated.

Mbita Deputy County Commissioner Abraham Kemboi cautioned the residents from protecting the fugitive and urged them to cooperate with police to track him down.

“Anyone found culpable of helping the resident will be charged with aiding and abating a wanted person.

"The suspect is still at large. We will, however, trace him and ensure he is charged," Kemboi stated.
