Top 100 Kenyans 2021: How a Medic Turned Passion to a Lucrative Venture

The road to the top has not always been an easy one for many, there are peaks and valleys that may decelerate one's progress. However, the decision to remain in the same position or do something is entirely in your hands.

This is the mantra of one Wala Amakove, whose story signifies that truly nothing is impossible when you set your heart and mind to it. 

Wala's journey traces back to her childhood when she aspired to become a lawyer. Her decision, however, changed after being queasy about defending criminals, making her pursue medicine. She is currently, a resourceful Medical Doctor focusing on healthcare policies and programs.

Through her unflinching determination, she was able to rise to the pinnacle of her career in medicine. With over 15 years of experience in health programs design, management and implementation, she has pioneered as an accomplished leader and a key contributor to the development of several guidelines, health bills, and health sector policies.

The gallant medical resourceful has a very interesting life outside her career. From her social media pages it is evident that she has mastered the art of not putting all her eggs in one basket as she is also a travel blogger on her Facebook page dubbed Wanderlust Diaries.

A familiar face to many, the Wanderlust Diaries CEO is the perfect embodiment of what it means to be courageous – eating life with a big spoon at every turn, her travel page, which incorporates videos and photos is comparative to a futuristic storybook teleporting you to that place.

Evident from her Facebook page, Wala has achieved a tremendous public following of up to 394,000 members who actively engage her travel experiences.

For her exemplary efforts towards putting Kenya on the global map, she was acknowledged by the Tourism Confederation and the Kenya Tourism Board, additionally, she was interviewed by Sheryl Sandberg, the Chief Operating Officer at Facebook (COO).

Earlier this year, she won the 2021 Facebook Community Accelerator Program trouncing 13 other Facebook community leaders from Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. 

The group has been so impactful that she was featured in the #realpeoplerealstoriescampaign, a partnership between Facebook and creative Garage to tell the everyday stories of individuals bringing change in communities.

Being one of two Kenyans who were recognized, her online community is set to receive training, mentorship and up to Ksh5 million in funding to invest in an initiative that extends her community's positive impact.

Additionally, she is known for program refinements and building credibility and partnerships with leading national and international health sector stakeholders and non-governmental organizations.
