An Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officer was on Thursday, December 2, arrested in Mathira, Nyeri, for allegedly attempting to bribe a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Officer.
The suspect tried to bribe the investigatory officer with Ksh200,000 to help influence a land ownership dispute in the area.
The EACC officer had fraudulently acquired a title deed for a piece of land belonging to his uncle, and wanted the officer to cover him up so as not to be taken to court.
According to a police report seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the suspect found the County Criminal Investigation Officer (CCIO) Obed Mulunga, in his office in the company of two cops, where he requested to see Mulunga privately.
The police officers upon the request, left the office to the residential areas in Karatina, leaving the EACC officer with Mulunga.
The police boss, after listening to the request of the suspect, secretly contacted cops who had just left in order to have them help arrest the suspect.
The suspect was oblivious of the DCI boss' move. When the investigating officers arrived in the office, Mulunga briefed the officers and ordered one of them to search the suspect, where they found money in Ksh1000 denominations.
Mulunga ordered the suspect to count the money as one of the officers recorded a video of what was happening in the office, where the amount totalled to Ksh150,000.
During the recording of an inventory, the two men who had come to report about their aunt's land, were told to produce their IDs as they were witnesses, which they denied.
As more people started arriving at the office upon the spread of information, police learnt that the two were colleagues of the suspect and worked with him at Nyeri EACC offices.
The money was taken to the custody of police to be used as exhibit as the suspect also remains locked in
