Rescue operations were halted after two men feared trapped in a building that collapsed on Friday, December 17, appeared at the scene three days later.
The duo, Stephen Musembi and Benson Ndung’u, showed up on Monday, December 20, after being informed they were the two workers who had not been accounted for.
County disaster manager, Bilha Wanjiku, told the media that the two were part of the eight workers who were at the construction site on the fateful day.
However, the duo explained they managed to step out when the building collapsed and went home immediately.
The death toll rose to six on Sunday after one of the workers succumbed to injuries at the Thika Level Five Hospital where he had been admitted.
Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia, regretted the incident, warning developers against a repeat of such an incident.
“We will not want to have a recurrence of this kind of incident because it negates all the good work which has been done.
“Greed should not be the determining factor that you want to build very quickly so that you can start getting returns, it should be the safety of the people who are constructing the building and the people who will use it once it is completed," Macharia stated.
In addition, the CS announced that the building adjacent to the collapsed one would also be demolished.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is already hunting down all the professionals concerned, both at the National government and at the county level,” he concluded.
