The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director General Mohamed Badi has taken action after two Nairobi residents were on Tuesday, December 28, shot by police officers.

Badi visited the Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums on Wednesday, December 29, where the two men were allegedly shot by police officers.

The NMS boss, who was in the company of the Inspector General of the Police, Hillary Mutyambai, revealed that a probe had been launched to establish the officer that ordered the police to open fire.

"I'm here with IG; allow us to investigate who gave orders allowing police to shoot at the residents" Badi stated.

Of the two men who were shot, one of them died while the other, 18-year-old, Evans Mutisya, is in critical condition at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Badi rebuked the use of live ammunition by the police officers. He also assured the residents that they would not be evicted unlawfully.

"I was here before and said you will not be evicted without following due process. No one will be displaced in an inhumane manner," the NMS Boss reiterated.

On Tuesday, residents of the Mukuru informal settlements engaged police officers in protracted running battles, protesting the erection of beams on land that was allegedly under dispute.

The officers were dispatched to dispel the residents who claimed that they were illegally being evacuated. They argued that their make-shift houses were illegally demolished.

Speaking to the media, a resident stated that the matter was still in court and was scheduled to be heard on January 24, 2022.

The court had issued a conservatory order calling for a cease and desist of any demolitions in the area and that the community be allowed to continue living in the disputed area until the case was determined.

Subsequently, the orders were shared with the relevant authority including the area police commander and the Nairobi County Commander. As a result he demolitions many slum residents have been left to spend nights in the cold.
