Four police officers were killed after a shootout ensued between armed thugs and the cops who were on duty.

North Eastern Regional Police Commander Rono Bunei confirmed that the four officers were ambushed on Monday, January 10 in Garissa.

The four were attacked by the armed bandits while on patrol in a Toyota Probox.

“Our security officers were ambushed as they were patrolling along the Liboi Kulan road by people we suspect to be bandits.

"It is unfortunate that we lost four officers but we dispatched a combined security team to comb the area for the attackers,” Bunei confirmed.

The police commander further revealed that a manhunt for the unknown bandits was launched the same day it is expected to last until they are captured.

“The joint operation is underway to recover the stolen firearm and track down the bandits,” he added.

Terrorist and bandit attacks targeting public vehicles and police vans have been on the rise in the North Eastern region.

In mid-December 2021,  a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) ferrying passengers was attacked by bandits along the Isiolo-Moyale highway.

The incident left two people nursing injuries at the Isiolo Referral Hospital.

More than twenty bandits emerged from bushes along the Isiolo-Moyale highway and opened fire at the matatu injuring the driver and a passenger according to police report.

In January 2022, four different attacks were reported in the North Eastern and Coastal regions of Kenya. Police linked the raids to the local militia and the Al Shabaab.

“We are determined to ensure that ugly spectre of violence on scale that we have regrettably witnessed in the past years does not recur,” Interior CS Fred Matiang’i stated in January 2022 following attacks in Lamu.
