Marsabit, which is one of the country's North-most regions, is prone to attacks by people believed to be Al Shabaab militia or their sympathisers.

Banditry attacks of such nature are a common course with the government moving in to beef up security in the volatile region.

The government has asked citizens to take caution, observing that terrorism remained a global threat and that most countries are on high alert.

"We urge all citizens to be vigilant while in places with high human traffic and to promptly report any suspicious character, behaviour, movement or unattended parcels to the nearest police officer or police station."

Last week, six people were shot dead after the canter they were travelling in was sprayed with bullets by armed militia along Marsabit - Badasa Road.

Marsabit Governor, Mohamud Ali, stated the killings took place near the county's police station ahead of a major harambee meeting.

"An elaborate system has been put in place to undermine the county government of Marsabit so that the county is ungovernable. Every time we have a major activity, merciless killings like this happen," he stated.

Eleven others were admitted to Marsabit Referral Hospital with gunshot wounds.
