A family in Kisumu is now calling on the National Police Service (NPS) to help track their son, a General Service Unit (GSU) officer, who went missing seven months ago.

The family of Joseph Otieno, who was stationed at the Ruaraka GSU Base in Nairobi County, says their kin last communicated with them on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, and his phone went off since then.

According to the mother, her son had called on that day to inform her that he would be travelling to their village home over the weekend.

“I spoke to my son on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, and he notified me that he would be coming home. But on Friday, when I tried calling him, I could not reach him,” narrated the mother.

Otieno’s mother noted that he was never unreachable, regardless of the situation, and him switching off the phone worried him.

“I kept calling but his phone was not reachable. I tried calling his second wife and she told me that he had gone to the supermarket to pick some few household items as he got a haircut before he travels.”

The distressed mother, however, says that despite being informed that her son would always switch off his phone when he reported to work, she would keep on calling to no success.

“On Saturday, his second wife called me and shared my concerns. She said her efforts to reach him on phone were unfruitful, and that his friends had also not seen him,” the mother narrated.

His father detailed how the family is in distress as their son was a pillar of strength.

“He was the sole breadwinner. We can no longer go on with some development projects we were undertaking at home,” stated the father.

“We are appealing to the government through Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiangi, and President Uhuru Kenyatta to assist us in tracing our son. We are in distress but remain hopeful that we will meet him,” the father pledged.

The appeal comes on the back of yet another heartbreaking story of mysterious disappearances that unfortunately ended tragically after unidentified bodies were discovered in River Yala.
