Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli now claims that Mudavadi’s speech at the Amani National Conference (ANC) National Delegates Conference was authored by Deputy President William Ruto.

In a statement on Monday, January 24, Atwoli accused Mudavadi of dishonesty and betrayal by allowing the DP to use him for selfish political interests.

The COTU boss took fault at the ANC attacks on Azimio bigwigs - noting that it’s not in Mudavadi’s nature to outrightly slam him and other respected leaders.

“Anybody who has been listening to what William Ruto has been talking about me, Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta can attest that it was him (Mudavadi) who crafted that speech," stated Atwoli.

“The speech was not Musalia’s. He (Musalia) has over the years portrayed himself as a humble person who doesn’t want to attack others. That was imported language into Musalia’s mouth,” Atwoli asserted.

Atwoli recounted how he has supported Mudavadi’s political career but is now dismayed at the ANC leader’s betrayal.

“In 2016, I spent over 200 million shillings trying to resuscitate Mudavadi back to political life by making him the spokesman of the Luhya community during the Bukhungu one meeting and at that time, in his eyes, I was a good boy and COTU (K) was a firebrand workers' union,” narrated Atwoli.

He went on to throw shade at Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula while accusing them of auctioning the parties, ANC and Ford Kenya, to the highest bidders.

“If these two parties are not political commercial kiosks, Mudavadi should come out and refute the rumour that Ruto gave him 300 million shillings to build his Karen home,”

Ruto made a guest appearance at the ANC event, accompanied by a host of UDA allied MP’s, occasioning a walkout by One Kenya Alliance (OKA) principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Gideon Moi.

The DP’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is set to embark on joint rallies with ANC and Ford Kenya to popularise their new political marriage.

In his much-awaited speech at the NDC, Mudavadi slammed Atwoli for not doing enough to champion Kenyan workers’ interests. The trade unionist, however, defended his role in the labour movement - noting that COTU was respected globally as a protector of workers' rights - including in the push for expansion of democratic space.
