A military officer said to be rogue and on the run is under the Kenya Defence Forces radar.
KDF deployed a senior officer to receive a file and the fugitive’s bag from police at the Kenol Police Station in Murang’a County.
Police also handed over the case to KDF which was reported to have confirmed that the wanted officer belonged to the forces. The officer was reported to have been part of a team that was allegedly trafficking immigrants from Ethiopia in late January 2022.
The car they were travelling in rolled at St Michael’s, in Murang’a. Preliminary reports indicated that the vehicle was sprayed with bullets on its rear side.
Seven immigrants survived, one KDF officer passed away while his colleague who is wanted, escaped with injuries. The degree of the injuries sustained was not ascertained.
However, eyewitnesses stated that appeared to be limping while heading towards a nearby terminus where he boarded a PSV.
The military officer who was sent to process the case seized the other soldier’s body and transferred it to an undisclosed morgue pending an autopsy.
KDF launched an investigation into the case after Murang’a South Police Commander Alexander Shikondi handed over military equipment seized from the scene. Shikondi noted that the items included a military beret, jungle vest and uniform and a KDF payslip.
The payslip detailed the identity of the military officer, which will aid KDF in tracking him down.
All the items forwarded by the police boss were packed in a bag which the officer dropped.
“The driver was a soldier in active service but on leave. We have reported the matter to the Department of Defense (DOD) as we investigate the case,” police boss Alexander Shikondi stated.
“A bag that had military attire was found abandoned a few kilometres from the scene. We forwarded it to the military for confirmation,” he added.
Investigations are also underway to determine whether the KDF officers were part of a human trafficking racket.
