A two-year-old girl was found alive and unhurt in a house where a police officer shot his wife 16 times before turning the gun on himself.
The officer, who was attached to Migori Police Station, is reported to have committed the act a short while after midnight.
Speaking to the press on Sunday, February 20, Migori County Commander Mark Wanjala confirmed that the officer had left the station without handing in his gun.
He further noted that when the police arrived at the house, they found the daughter inside the house unhurt.
The commander further indicated that, upon inspection, the officers found that the woman had been short 16 times and that 17 spent cartridges were found at the scene.
"The firearm had 13 bullets remaining after the officer spent 17 cartridges," stated the commander as per the Standard.
Locals neighbouring the scene of the crime noted that the woman was expectant at the time of the shooting.
Over recent years, cases of suicide and homicides have become common with people pointing fingers at the worsening state of the economy.
On Thursday, February 17, a veteran Nation Media Group journalist was found dead inside his home alongside a suicide note he is believed to have authored.
The note reportedly detailed his financial struggles and wedlock challenges before he decided to end his life.
It further revealed that the long-serving Kakamega correspondent for Nation was mentally unstable and suffering from intestinal cancer which pushed him to the cliff.
Police have, however, launched plans to introduce programs to help police officers deal with mental health issues.
