The government has started the process of transferring hundreds of students slated to sit for the national examinations in March 2022.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, February 20, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Mohammed Maalim noted that he had initiated meetings with Education stakeholders.

He explained that the transfer seeks to ensure that all national examinations candidates from both primary and secondary schools sit the exams without interruptions.

10 schools had been affected by banditry attacks in Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet counties prompting the Ministry of Interior and that of Education to swing into action.

"I have already initiated a meeting with the county commissioners, the regional security intelligence committee and education officials within the course of this week.

"On Thursday (February 17), we will have that meeting so that we put security measures and other logistical arrangements to make sure we have smooth running," stated Maalim.

The Kenya National Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is slated to begin on March 12 while the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) will kick off on March 7, 2022.

This development comes days after 15 Tot High School students sustained injuries following a bandit attack.

Armed bandits attacked their school buses as they were returning from a school trip on the evening of Thursday, February 17.

The driver was shot dead during the attack that took place along the Tot - Arror Road in Elgeyo Marakwet County. The students were in three buses.

Additionally, two teachers - a male and female - are in critical condition after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds even as police launched a manhunt for the suspects.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander, Patrick Lumumba, criticised the school administration for allowing the students to use the road despite the recent attacks that have been experienced in the area.

Following the attack, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i ordered for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the school principal for defying a government directive on movement of school buses at night.
