The National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya has traced the fallout of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.
While appearing on KTN News show Checkpoint on Sunday, February 20, Kimunya, a fierce defender of the Head of State, explained that the two assumed office with much camaraderie in 2013.
What drove them apart, however, was Uhuru's intention on battling graft that had bedevilled the country for years.
The difference came in, he explained, when, without cause action, leaders allied to the Deputy President accused the Head of State of using the war against graft to settle scores.
"In the first term, (President Uhuru) decided to let him free and to do a couple of things. 'I give you freedom to sought a few Ministries. Give you half the government to appoint Ministers and the other one to appoint the Cabinet Secretaries.'
"There is a common thread you see in all those things. The high levels of graft that were reported in the first half," stated Kimunya.
He further noted that the state recorded the highest cases of graft during the duo's first term, especially when Ruto was given the freedom to oversee the running of certain ministries.
He, however, tracked down their falling out after the handshake (between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga) when Uhuru decided to stump out the vice full throttle.
He accused those allied to the DP of claiming that the state was weaponising the fight against graft as though they had a hidden agenda.
"In the first term, there was a bit of development. There was a lot of camaraderie and wearing ties and all that but that is also the period where we witnessed the highest levels of graft.
"One of the nine agenda points of the handshake was the battle on graft and immediately (that was put in place) the people who support the deputy President started talking about weaponisation in the fight of graft yet nobody had said the fight against graft was targeting the Deputy President," added Kimunya.
He also argued that the Ruto's doublespeak and insistence on carrying out campaigns further widened their rift.
"You can see where the two fell out and all that double speak and him being asked to stop campaigning then he went campaigning
"If somebody defies you for four years, there is no way you are going to support him when you have a better candidate," he continued.
Ruto, who is seeking to succeed Uhuru at State House, has claimed that his boss is supporting Raila with the aim of ensuring that he (Raila) becomes the fifth President.
The DP, however, maintains that he carried out his duties as the Deputy President and is responsible for Jubilee Government's development record.
