The Nairobi Hospital is now opening its commercial laundry services to the public in a bid to boost its revenue streams through diversification.

The premier hospital, in a statement shared on Monday, February 21, announced that it was accepting linen from the public, promising professional and satisfactory laundry services.

A source from Nairobi Hospital confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that the business had been operational but largely handled in house linen.

A research showed that the hospital purchased the Girbau sanitary barrier machinery to ensure separation between the two areas in the laundry and preventing cross contamination between dirty and clean linen.

The facility is equipped with a TBS50 Hygiene batch washer to be able to cope with up to 1,200 kg of linen per hour.

According to the machine's maker, Girbau Global Laundry Solutions, the batch system provides intensive washing processes which in turn eliminates high levels of dirt.

"It features an intermediate tank with a filter which removes fibrin and coloured particles from the water so that they are not transferred to subsequent loads, and features a batch washer disinfection programme when empty that injects steam into all the modules to keep them at 80º C.

"For small batches, two BW630 sanitary barrier washing machines were added," reads a statement from Girbau Global Laundry Solutions.

The laundry also has between 63kg and 122kg HS Series washing machines which can handle large volumes of dirty laundry quickly.

The first machine is the Aquamixer system (automatically mixing hot and cold water) which saves energy on heating water.

The other is the Aquafall system (with perforated blades inside the drum) that ensures better rinsing to completely eliminate traces of chemicals from  linen.

It still not clear how much the hospital charges for the public to use the facility but some customers claimed that the institution boasts of some of the best laundry facilities countrywide.

"I can see majority of the replies literally don't know the kind of business being advertised. Nairobi Hospital has the best Laundry facility in the country, they already offering services to some institutions," stated Siphe Nandi.

The laundry industry is a profitable venture that support both small scale and large scale businesses. An individual can break into the sector with as low as Ksh100,000 with licenses going as high as Ksh10,000.

Individual businesses can make a monthly profit of Ksh100,000. The global laundry industry is valued at Ksh8.5 trillions according to Globe Newswire.
